What is Psoriasis?
Psoriasis is a chronic, non-contagious, immune-mediated disease characterized by visible signs of inflammation such as raised plaques (plaques may look different for different skin types) and scales on the skin. The patches may be red, pink, or purple, dry, itchy, and scaly. Psoriasis varies in severity from small, localized patches to complete body coverage.
The signs and symptoms of psoriasis depend upon the type of the disease. The five main types of psoriasis are plaque, guttate, inverse, pustular, and erythrodermic.
In Ayurveda, the skin disease, in general, is termed Kushta. The skin condition Psoriasis can be correlated with 3 different skin diseases such as Sidhma, Eka, and Kitibha Kushta.

1. The commonest type of psoriasis is usually characterized by red patches with white scales on top. The back of the forearms, shins, navel area, and scalp are the most commonly affected areas.
2. Red patches in the skin fold that eventually spread over the body.
3. Pus-filled blisters are also found in rare cases.
4. Pits in the fingernails or changes in nail colour.
As per the Ayurvedic classics, emphasis is given to Shodhana therapy (Bio-detoxification) as the first line of treatment for psoriasis, which can be roughly correlated with 3 skin complaints such as Eka / Sidhma / Kitibha kushtaroga. According to the famous Vaidya Charaka, the disease cured by Shodhana will never reoccur or become a chronic condition, which highlights the need for Panchakarma therapies (5 types of bio-detoxification processes) for psoriasis.
The treatment mainly involves,
Vamana (medicine-induced vomiting): which removes the vitiated toxins and specifically vitiated Kapha Dosha.
Virechana (medicine-induced purgation): removes the vitiated toxins and specifically vitiated Pitta Dosha.
Vasthi (Medicated enema): this is not only to clean the colon but also to correct the metabolism and aid in the palliation of Vata dosha.
Even after getting these three treatments, if the skin lesions are still present, Rakthamoksha (Bloodletting) must be performed to clear the area of impure blood and encourage the flow of healthy blood into the injured area in order to rejuvenate the muscles and skin layers.
These procedures are richly supplemented with other external therapies that focus on reducing the severity of patches and help in restoring healthy skin.

Psoriasis is generally thought to be a genetic disease that is often triggered by environmental factors. Symptoms often worsen during winter and with certain medications, such as beta-blockers or NSAIDs. Infections and psychological stress also play a major role. The underlying mechanism involves the immune system reacting to skin cells. Diagnosis is typically based on the signs and symptoms. In addition to the appearance and distribution of the rash, specific medical signs may be used by medical practitioners to assist with diagnosis.
