WHAT IS CENTRAL SEROUS RETINOPATHY?

Central serous retinopathy (CSR) or central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR) is an eye condition where fluid builds up under the retina, particularly in the macula, leading to distorted vision. This fluid causes the retina to detach from the underlying tissue, resulting in symptoms like blurred vision, central visual distortion, and sometimes colour perception issues.

TYPES

  • Acute CSR: Rapid fluid accumulation with sudden onset. Often resolves on its own within a few months but may leave residual vision changes.
  • Chronic CSR: Persistent fluid build-up lasting over six months. Can lead to long-term vision problems and may require medical treatment.

SIGNS & SYMPTOMS

  • Blurred or Distorted Central Vision: Central vision may become unclear or wavy.
  • Dark or Empty Spots in Vision: Blind spots or dark areas in the central vision field.
  • Color Vision Changes: Difficulty in recognizing or perceiving colors accurately.
  • Visual Distortion: Straight lines may appear bent or distorted.
  • Reduced Night Vision: Increased difficulty seeing in low-light conditions.
  • Decreased Visual Acuity: General reduction in sharpness of vision.

CAUSES

  • Stress: High stress levels are a significant risk factor for CSR, often linked to hormonal or blood pressure changes.
  • High Blood Pressure: Elevated blood pressure can lead to fluid leakage in the retina.
  • Corticosteroid Use: Prolonged or high-dose use of corticosteroids is associated with CSR development.
  • Hormonal Changes: Hormonal fluctuations, particularly in men, are a potential risk factor.
  • Chronic Illnesses: Conditions like autoimmune diseases or chronic infections may also contribute to CSR.

TREATMENT AT SANJEEVANAM

At Sanjeevanam, Ayurvedic treatment for CSR focuses on balancing doshas, supporting eye health, and managing stress, which is a significant factor in CSR.

  • Panchakarma Therapies: Treatments like Virechana (therapeutic purgation) and Nasya (nasal treatment) help detoxify the body, balance doshas, and reduce stress, improving eye health.
  • Eye Treatments: There are specialized Ayurvedic eye treatments like Seka (Pouring Decoction over closed eyes), Aschyotana (Eye Drops), Bidalaka (Herbal EyeLid Paste) that nourish and cleanse the eyes, supporting healthy retinal function.
  • Ayurvedic Diet: A diet rich in antioxidants, anti-inflammatory foods, whole grains, and fresh vegetables can enhance retinal health. Stress-reducing foods are also recommended.
  • Yoga and Meditation: Techniques like Trataka (eye exercises) and Nadi Shodhana (alternate nostril breathing) help improve eye health and reduce stress, which plays a crucial role in preventing and managing CSR.
