WHAT IS MACULAR EDEMA ?

Macular edema is an eye condition characterized by the buildup of fluid in the macula, the central region of the retina responsible for clear and detailed vision. This fluid accumulation causes the macula to swell and thicken, resulting in visual distortions and, if left untreated, can lead to significant vision loss.

TYPES

  • Diabetic Macular Edema (DME): Caused by diabetic retinopathy, where damaged blood vessels leak fluid into the macula.
  • Cystoid Macular Edema (CME): Fluid-filled cysts form in the macula, often after surgery or due to inflammation.
  • Ischemic Macular Edema (IME): Occurs from poor blood flow in the retina, resulting in oxygen deprivation and fluid leakage.

SIGNS & SYMPTOMS

  • Blurry or Wavy Vision: Central vision may appear distorted, making it challenging to see fine details.
  • Faded Colors: A diminished ability to perceive colors accurately.
  • Dark or Empty Areas: Presence of blind spots or dark areas in central vision.
  • Difficulty Reading: Challenges in reading due to distorted letters and words.
  • Reduced Central Vision: Trouble recognizing faces or focusing on small objects.
  • Double Vision: In some cases, swelling may lead to double vision.
  • Increased Light Sensitivity: Bright lights can cause discomfort or glare.

CAUSES

  • Diabetic Retinopathy: High blood sugar levels damage retinal blood vessels, causing fluid leakage.
  • Retinal Vein Occlusion: Blockages in retinal veins lead to fluid accumulation in the macula.
  • Inflammatory Eye Diseases: Conditions such as uveitis cause inflammation and fluid buildup in the retina.
  • Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD): Abnormal blood vessels in wet AMD can leak fluid into the macula.
  • Post-Surgical Complications: Procedures like cataract surgery may result in temporary macular edema.
  • Genetic Disorders: Conditions such as retinitis pigmentosa may be linked to macular edema.
