WHAT IS ADENOMYOSIS?

  • Adenomyosis is a common uterine condition that can cause heavy periods. It is characterized by the abnormal presence of endometrial tissue (which typically lines the uterus) embedded within the muscular walls of the uterus. This benign gynecological disorder presents with distressing symptoms, including heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain, and discomfort during intercourse.
  • Also referred to as internal endometriosis, adenomyosis usually impacts women of childbearing age and can impact their fertility.

CAUSES

There are certain factors which can put a category of women at greater risk for Adenomyosis,

  • More common in middle-aged women in their 30s and 40s.
  • Factors like childbirth and uterine surgery (including cesarean section and D&C) are considered as potential triggers too.
  • Hormonal imbalances, including fluctuations in oestrogen levels have also been implicated in the development of endometrial tissue within the uterine walls.
  • Exposure to Hormone based infertility treatments.
