WHAT IS AGE-RELATED MACULAR DEGENERATION?

Age-Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD) is a progressive eye disorder affecting the macula, the central part of the retina that is responsible for sharp and detailed vision. It is a leading cause of vision loss in older adults.

TYPES

Dry ARMD

  • Cause: Gradual degeneration with the buildup of drusen (yellow deposits).
  • Characteristics: Slow progression with moderate vision loss over time.

Wet ARMD

  • Cause: Growth of abnormal blood vessels that leak fluid or blood.
  • Characteristics: Rapid vision loss and potential severe impairment if untreated.
