WHAT IS ARTHRITIS?

Arthritis is the swelling and tenderness of one or more joints.Arthritis affects more than 180 million people in India- prevalence higher than many well-known diseases such as Diabetes, AIDS and Cancer. Around 14% of the Indian population seeks a doctor’s help every year for this joint condition.Women are three to four times more frequently affected than men. Onset generally occurs in the 35-55 year age group.

Common Types of Arthritis:

  • Osteoarthritis.
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis.
  • Psoriatic Arthritis.
  • Gout.
  • Lupus

In Ayurveda, all these kinds of inflammatory diseases related to the joints can be listed under Vata vikara.There are about 80 numbers of vata vikara mentioned in classical Ayurveda texts. The clinical manifestations of the very common types of arthritis can be well correlated with different types of vatavikara mentioned in Ayurveda classics like Aama vata,Sandhi vata, Vata rakta etc.The most common variant of arthritis affecting the quality of life is Rheumatoid arthritis ,the symptoms of which can be very well correlated to the Amavata mentioned in Ayurveda.

SIGNS & SYMPTOMS OF ARTHRITIS

  • Pain and inflammation of one or more joints particularly of the hand, foot, tarsals, knee, thigh and sacrum. Ayurveda mentions the pain of joints in Ama vata as a scorpion bite.
  • Loss of appetite, indigestion
  • Fever, vague pain in different parts of the body
  • Feeling of heaviness in the body
  • Morning stiffness
  • Lack of initiative disturbance in sleep habit

According to Ayurveda Ama(metabolic or digestive toxins)clogs the microcirculations and causes inflammation.So correction of digestion and metabolism is given utmost importance in Ayurveda management of Arthritis Normally, the immune system protects the body from disease. In people who have rheumatoid arthritis, something—possibly infections, cigarette smoking, and physical or emotional stress, among other causes—triggers the immune system to attack the joints.
