WHAT IS DRY EYES?

Dry eye is a common condition where the eyes fail to produce sufficient tears or the tears evaporate too quickly. This leads to discomfort, irritation, and even vision problems. Much like how the skin can become dry and cracked, the surface of the eyes can become inflamed, making it harder to focus and see clearly.

TYPES

  • Aqueous Deficient Dry Eye: This occurs when the lacrimal glands do not produce enough watery tears. Common causes include aging, hormonal changes, autoimmune diseases, or certain medications.
  • Evaporative Dry Eye: Caused by insufficient production of the oily component of tears from the Meibomian glands, which leads to rapid tear evaporation. This type is often associated with eyelid disorders, environmental factors, or prolonged contact lens use.

SIGNS & SYMPTOMS

  • Burning, stinging, or scratchy sensations
  • Sensation of having something in the eye
  • Redness, irritation, or inflammation
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Blurred vision or difficulty focusing
  • Eye fatigue or strain, especially after screen use
  • Difficulty wearing contact lenses

CAUSES

  • Aging: Tear production decreases naturally with age, especially during menopause in women.
  • Medical Conditions: Autoimmune disorders like rheumatoid arthritis and Sjögren’s syndrome can cause dry eyes.
  • Medications: Some drugs, such as antihistamines and antidepressants, reduce tear production.
  • Environmental Factors: Dry climates, air conditioning, and exposure to wind or smoke can cause tears to evaporate too quickly.
  • Digital Devices: Staring at screens for prolonged periods reduces blinking, contributing to dry eyes.
