WHAT IS PCOD / PCOS

  • Female infertility, a prevalent issue in reproductive-age women, is often attributed to Polycystic Ovarian Disease (PCOD), the leading cause of infertility. In India, PCOS affects around 9.13% of adolescents. This condition involves multiple cysts on the ovaries, disrupting normal functions and leading to anovulation, menstrual irregularities, obesity, hirsutism, acne, and infertility without proper medical attention.
  • Ayurveda identifies Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) or Polycystic Ovarian Disease (PCOD) as “Sthoulya” or “Artava Kshaya.” It views PCOD as a disorder impacting the reproductive and endocrine systems, attributed to an imbalance in the doshas—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Specifically, excess Kapha and Pitta doshas, along with imbalances in meda dhatu (body fat) and rasa dhatu (plasma), contribute to PCOD development.

SIGNS , SYMPTOMS & RISK FACTORS

  • Irregular Menstrual Cycles-Scanty bleeding ,excessive heavy bleeding ,irregular mid cycle bleeding etc
  • Ovulatory Dysfunction-Anovulation ,Poor egg reserve (Low AMH)
  • Hirsutism-excessive facial and body hairs
  • Weight Gain or Obesity-especially central obesity
  • Acne and Oily Skin
  • Multiple Cysts on Ovaries

CAUSES

  • Genetic Predisposition: There is evidence suggesting a genetic component in PCOS, as it tends to run in families. Certain gene variations may increase the likelihood of developing PCOS.
  • Hormonal Imbalance: PCOS is associated with an imbalance in reproductive hormones, particularly elevated levels of luteinizing hormone (LH) and androgens (such as testosterone).
  • Chronic Inflammation: Chronic low-grade inflammation has been implicated in PCOS, with higher levels of inflammatory markers observed in some individuals with the condition.
  • Environmental Factors: PCOS may occur as a result of a number of factors, including a diet high in refined carbohydrates, a sedentary lifestyle, and exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals
  • Obesity: Obesity is a risk factor for the onset and worsening of PCOS symptoms, even though not all women with PCOS are because of overweight. Hormonal imbalances and insulin resistance are two conditions that obesity can exacerbate.
  • Abnormal Fetal Development: A number of researchers investigate the possibility that exposure to specific conditions during fetal development could play a pivotal role in the development of PCOS in later life.
