WHAT IS STROKE ?

When blood supply to a part of the brain is blocked or reduced, brain tissue doesn’t receive the oxygen and nutrients it needs, leading to the rapid death of brain cells. Additionally, if a blood vessel in the brain bursts, it causes bleeding, which increases pressure on brain cells and can damage them. Understanding these processes is essential for effective treatment and prevention of brain injuries.

This can occur in two ways:

  • Ischemic Stroke : It is the most common type, caused by a blockage in an artery that reduces blood flow to the brain.
  • Haemorrhagic Stroke: Which caused by a burst blood vessel, leading to bleed inside of the brain.

SIGNS & SYMPTOMS

Recognizing the symptoms early and getting prompt treatment can greatly improve the recovery and reduce the risk of long-term disability. Since ischemic strokes are more common, understanding the difference between these types is essential for effective treatment and better outcomes.

The FAST rule helps quickly recognize a stroke and respond without delay, ensuring the affected individual receives the necessary medical care at the earliest possible.

  • F – Face Drooping: Check if one side of the face is drooping or feels numb. Do smile by showing the teeth. If the smile is uneven or lopsided, it could be a stroke sign.
  • A- Arm Weakness: Weakness in raise the arms. See if one arm slips downward or it feels weak.
  • S – Speech Difficulty: Recite a basic phrase. (e.g., “The sky is blue”). Slurred, unclear speech or difficulty speaking could be a stroke symptom.
  • T – Time for assistance or help: If you observe any of these signs, immediately call emergency services. Timely action to reach nearby hospital having all facility to provide best treatment for the same, can save lives and reduce the chances of permanent brain damage.

CAUSES

  • Ischemic stroke: It is resulting from narrowing or blockage of blood vessels in the brain. Fatty deposits that build up in the blood arteries or blood clots and other debris that move through the circulation and frequently originate from the heart might cause obstruction to crucial blood flow to the brain.
  • Haemorrhagic stroke: A hemorrhagic stroke occurs when a blood vessel in the brain ruptures, causing bleeding within or around brain tissue. This can result from high blood pressure, aneurysms, or weakened blood vessels. The bleeding disrupts brain function by increasing pressure and reducing blood flow.
  • Transient ischemic attack (TIA): It is called as mini strokes, a temporary episode that feels like a stroke often lasting just a few minutes but doesn’t cause lasting damage, but serves as a warning sign for potential future strokes. This normally happens due to a blood clot or fatty deposit blocks blood flow to the brain.
