WHAT IS UVEITIS

Uveitis is a condition characterized by inflammation in the uvea—the middle layer of the eye, comprising the iris, ciliary body, and choroid.

TYPES

  • Anterior Uveitis: Affects the front part of the eye (iris, ciliary body) often marked by redness, pain, and light sensitivity.
  • Intermediate Uveitis: Involves the ciliary and vitreous body in the middle of the Eye, commonly causes floaters and blurred vision.
  • Posterior Uveitis: Impacts the back portion of the eye, including the retina and choroid; can lead to severe visual impairments and often relates to systemic diseases.
  • Panuveitis: Involves all uveal layers, presenting widespread inflammation.

SIGNS & SYMPTOMS

  • Eye Pain: Persistent discomfort in the affected eye.
  • Redness: Visible bloodshot appearance due to inflammation.
  • Light Sensitivity: Sensitivity to light, causing discomfort.
  • Blurred Vision: Distorted or unclear vision.
  • Floaters: Spots or strings appearing in the visual field.
  • Reduced Vision: Noticeable decrease in visual clarity.
  • Tearing: Excessive watery eyes.
  • Headache: Eye pain that can radiate to the head.

CAUSES

  • Autoimmune Disorders: Diseases like rheumatoid arthritis or lupus, where the immune system attacks eye tissues.
  • Infections: Bacterial, viral, or fungal infections affecting the uvea.
  • Trauma: Eye injury leading to inflammation.
  • Systemic Diseases: Conditions such as sarcoidosis or Bechet's disease, associated with systemic inflammation.
  • Eye Disorders: Eye-specific issues like retinal diseases or tumors.
  • Idiopathic: Cases where the cause is unidentified.
