WHAT IS VERTIGO ?

Vertigo is a unique form of dizziness where one feels a false sensation of spinning or movement, affecting balance and spatial orientation. This condition often arises from issues within the inner ear, brain, or both.

TYPES

  • Central Vertigo: Originates from problems in the central nervous system, particularly the brainstem or cerebellum, which play key roles in balance and spatial orientation.
  • Peripheral Vertigo: Originates from problems in the inner ear or vestibular nerve, which are essential for balance.

SIGNS & SYMPTOMS

  • Spinning Sensation: A strong feeling of self or surroundings spinning.
  • Balance Issues: Difficulty in maintaining balance.
  • Nausea or Vomiting: Often accompanies the dizzy sensation.
  • Hearing Loss: Can occur, particularly with conditions like Meniere’s disease.
  • Tinnitus: Ringing or buzzing in the ears.
  • Headaches: Frequent headaches often accompany vertigo.

CAUSES

  • Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV): Small calcium crystals within the inner ear become dislodged, causing dizziness.
  • Meniere's Disease: A fluid buildup in the inner ear, leading to vertigo episodes, hearing loss, and tinnitus.
  • Vestibular Neuritis: Viral inflammation of the vestibular nerve, causing vertigo.
  • Inner Ear Infections: Infections or inflammations in inner ear structures can trigger vertigo.
  • Migraines: Some individuals experience vertigo as part of migraine symptoms.
