WHAT IS VOCAL CORD CYSTS ?

Vocal cord cysts are small, fluid-filled sacs that disrupt the natural vibration of the vocal cords, leading to noticeable changes in voice quality.

TYPES

  • Mucous Retention Cysts: It is caused due to the blockage of a mucus gland in the vocal fold.
  • Epidermoid Cysts: It is caused due to the cumulation of keratin (a protein found in skin cells) within the vocal cord.
  • Congenital Cysts: It is caused due to the present from birth due to developmental anomalies.

SIGNS & SYMPTOMS

  • Persistent hoarseness that doesn’t improve with rest
  • Voice fatigue, especially with prolonged use
  • A raspy, breathy, or rough-sounding voice
  • Difficulty controlling pitch, leading to fluctuations
  • Vocal strain, with discomfort or pain in the throat
  • Reduced vocal range, particularly in higher notes
  • Throat discomfort or a sensation of a lump in the throat

CAUSES

  • Vocal Strain or Overuse: Excessive or improper use of the voice, like shouting or singing loudly, can contribute to cyst formation.
  • Trauma: Injury to the vocal cords, either from vocal strain or external sources, can lead to cyst development.
  • Congenital Factors: Some individuals are born with vocal cord cysts, which may persist into adulthood.
  • Recurrent Infections: Chronic throat infections or inflammation increase the risk of cyst formation.
  • Reflux Laryngitis: Acid reflux can irritate the vocal cords, promoting cyst development.
